National Night Out Against Crime is an ambitious police-community partnership building event.  This year marks the 27th anniversary of National Night Out and the fourth year that the City of Glen Cove has participated.  Last year, 34 million people from over 10,000 communities across the United States participated in National Night Out.  Glen Cove is proud to join these communities in saying that we will not tolerate crime in our community.

Glen Cove’s Swift 911 Emergency Notification System

Recognizing the importance of information during an emergency, Glen Cove has instituted a telephonic emergency communication system.  Glen Cove’s Swift 911 system is a computerized telephone calling system that enables the City of Glen Cove to quickly notify residents in the event of an emergency.  The expectation is that our residents will have up-to-date emergency information that will assist them in the event of an emergency.
Please visit the Swift 911 table for more information, register your phone, or update your contact information

Dealing with Graffiti

Graffiti has become a growing concern of area residents.  Here are some tips for handling a graffiti problem:

  1. Report:  Notify the Police Department

  2. Record: Photograph the graffiti or have the Police take photos

  3. Remove: Remove graffiti promptly and completely. Every effort should be made to remove markings within 24 hours.

Target Hardening Your Home

  1. Install motion-sensor lights around the perimeter of your home.  Make sure lights are at least 8 feet above ground level.

  2. Remove or trim overgrown bushes or shrubs from around entryways into your home including windows and cellar doors.

  3. Install double-keyed deadbolt locks on all exterior doorways and remove the interior key when not home.

  4. Properly install window air conditioners to ensure that entry cannot be made by removing unit.

  5. Notify a trusted neighbor when leaving home for an extended period of time (vacation) & arrange for mail pick-up or stop delivery.

  6. Notify the police department when your home will be vacant for an extended period of time.

  7. When away, utilize timed lighting systems so house is illuminated at night.

  8. If you have an alarm, ensure that you update your emergency contact information at the police department yearly.

  9. In 2005, 62% of all residential burglaries occurred during daytime hours.  Secure your home during the day as you would at night.

  10. Make sure your street number is clearly visible from the street.  If the police cannot find you, they cannot help you.
