Impound Releases

Fees:
Impound Release Letter- $75.00 administrative fee (cash only - exact change) payable to the Glen Cove Police Department.

Impound Tow Fee- $225 payable to the Impound Yard Operator.

Legally Registered Vehicles
In order to retrieve a legally registered vehicle from impound, theowner of the vehicle must first obtain an Impound Release Letter from the Main Desk at Glen Cove Police Headquarters. This letter authorizes the Impound Yard Operator to release the impounded vehicle to its owner. The owner must present proof of ownership (vehicle title or registration), proof of insurance, and possess a valid driver’s license (or be accompanied by a person who possesses a valid driver’s license). If the owner of an impounded vehicle is unable to respond to Headquarters or is located out-of-state, the owner may authorize a third party by notarized letter to retrieve a vehicle on their behalf. The owner (or his designee) will be issued an Impound Release Letter. There is a $75.00 administrative fee payable in cash only to the Glen Cove Police Department. Exact change is preferred as the main desk officer may be unable to provide change.  

Unregistered Vehicles
In order to retrieve an unregistered vehicle from impound, the owner of the vehicle must first obtain an Impound Release Letter from the Main Desk at Glen Cove Police Headquarters. The owner must present proof of ownership (vehicle title or registration). If the owner of an unregistered impounded vehicle is unable to respond to Headquarters or is located out-of-state, the owner may authorize a third party by notarized letter to retrieve a vehicle on their behalf. The owner (or his designee) will be issued an Impound Release Letter. This letter authorizes the Impound Yard Operator to release the impounded vehicle to its owner. All unregistered vehicles must be removed from impound by TOW TRUCK ONLY. No unregistered vehicle may be driven from the impound yard. The vehicle owner must arrange (at his own expense) a tow service to remove the impounded vehicle. There is a $75.00 administrative fee payable in cash only to the Glen Cove Police Department. Exact change is preferred as the main desk officer may be unable to provide change.  

Vehicles Impounded from Owners Operating with Suspended Licenses
An owner whose vehicle was impounded due to operating with a suspended license (VTL §511.2 or §511.3) must first obtain a release from the court or District Attorney of jurisdiction before the vehicle may be released. 

2010 OFFICIAL POLICE DUTY SERVICE (Impound Yard)
Other than those seized by police as evidence, all vehicles impounded by the Glen Cove Police Department are towed by and stored at the official duty service of the Glen Cove Police Department:

Upon receipt of an Impound Release Letter, the vehicle owner may respond to Impound Yard Operator to remove the impounded vehicle. There is a $225.00 towing and storage fee payable to Impound Yard Operator for the first day a vehicle is impounded. Additional storage fees will be charged for each day a vehicle remains in impound.
